Moved from the UK to HK when the kids were 11 and 14 and both went on to finish their schooling there. They were against the move at first both both settled within a few weeks.

Kids are very adaptable and being at school makes it easy to make new friends. Yes it is easy to keep in touch but life moves on.

i moved from London to Taiwan and put the family in Thailand
Kids were 10 month and 2. Had a bit of drama for a while but its all worked out well

I don't have kids - far too young for that yet

but in my opinion if your family has the chance to spend more time together, have more money to spare then it wouldnt be a problem - The kids wouldnt be pissed off if you can have more money to go out with them together as a family!
Like others have said they have the internet to talk to friends these days

All depends on whether you happy with your lot now. If you are why risk it?

If your not then it's 50/50 whether it will improve but without being you and knowing your positions in detail it's difficult to know.

It is true that kids will adapt though.

We took our daughter to Detroit for 3 months (not long I know) when she was 7. Went to school the whole time she was there, catching the yellow school bus. She loved it and it did her no harm whatsoever.

I moved from Brentwood to hackney. Took a lot of getting used to at the time but glad I did.

Moved 3500 miles and changed continent's.
Eldest boy was 12 and struggled to start with.
Ten years later all three of them love it.
Kids adapt and survive.

We moved 75 miles. No one knew a soul round here for what seemed like ages. You're better off because the kids will instantly have a new social network that will involve you as well.

Get into as many clubs as you can, kids football clubs, local social club, that kind of thing. Oh, and get to know the neighbours. They are really handy to help you settle in.

If it's a better place for the family, and for your kids to grow up, it's a good move. They will be initially pissed off, how long for depends on their age.

Is the wife for It? She will be the one that makes the difference, kids will soon mesh in wherever you go.
Seen loads of families moving to Shetland, done it myself as a kid.
Plenty of times I've seen families move here, Husband and kids really enjoy it, but the wife can't stand the break from family / big shops and she makes the guys life a misery until they move away, never seen a move back for kids not liking it.

Moved from California to Houston Texas...kids 4 &10...
Soon made new friends...bigger house...pool...more money...cheaper living costs...

Wins all round...

Try to find tangible benefits or the Wife & kids...get them involved in choosing new home...

It will work...

In your case I'd rent out current home...rent up north as your current home will be a better investment ...so don't cash in unless you will never return to the south...

Moved from London to the States in 1999. My kids were 4 and 9 at the time.
They made new friends and kept the old ones. The internet makes moving and keeping in touch easier than ever.
They can Skype their friends if they want. Facebook is great for this.
I think in the end it enriched the kids lives with no real loss. Perhaps a short hardship. But all adventures start with a little hardship.
